Irvine – A 24-year-old woman, Francis Guadalupe Tercero-Benavides of Anaheim, has been arrested in connection with a fatal hit-and-run crash that resulted in the death of 67-year-old Allen Yangkaou Lee. The incident occurred on May 9, 2024, at approximately 4:30 p.m. at the intersection of Culver Drive and Trabuco Road.

Lee was driving northbound on Culver Drive when Tercero-Benavides, operating a beige Honda Civic, made a right turn against a red light. This unexpected maneuver forced Lee to swerve to avoid a collision, causing him to lose control of his 2004 Toyota Corolla. The vehicle subsequently crashed into the center median, struck a tree, hit a light pole, and flipped onto its roof. Following the crash, Tercero-Benavides did not stop and fled the scene.

Following the accident, Lee was taken to a local hospital where he remained until succumbing to his injuries on May 13, 2024. Detectives investigating the incident received valuable tips from the public, which aided in the identification and location of Tercero-Benavides’ Honda Civic. The vehicle was found parked in the Great Park neighborhood on May 15, 2024, with identification documents linked to Tercero-Benavides discovered inside.

Despite being difficult to trace as she reportedly changed residences frequently throughout Orange County, Tercero-Benavides was eventually apprehended on July 3, 2025. Her arrest took place in the 1600 block of Anaheim Boulevard in Anaheim. Following her arrest, she was booked at the Orange County Jail, facing charges of vehicular manslaughter and felony hit-and-run.

Allen Lee, who actively participated in his community and enjoyed a loving role as a father and grandfather, is remembered fondly by his family members. The tragic circumstances surrounding his passing have left a profound impact on his loved ones, highlighting the emotional repercussions of the incident. Family members have expressed the deep sense of loss that they continue to feel in the wake of this tragedy.

The Irvine Police Department has publicly thanked the community for the critical tips that played a significant role in the prompt arrest of Tercero-Benavides. The collaboration between law enforcement and the public demonstrates the importance of community involvement in ensuring accountability in such serious matters.

This incident serves as a sober reminder of the responsibilities that come with driving and the potential consequences of recklessness on the road. With continued efforts from police, as well as the engagement of the community, authorities aim to prevent similar tragedies in the future.
