San Diego – The San Diego State men’s golf team has been recognized for its outstanding academic performance by receiving the 2024-25 PLATFORM Golf Team Academic Award from the Golf Coaches Association of America (GCAA). This accolade is awarded to collegiate golf programs that maintain a team GPA of 3.0 or higher, with the Aztecs being one of just 92 schools to achieve this distinction.
This accomplishment comes on the heels of a successful competitive season for the Aztecs, who secured their fourth consecutive Mountain West (MW) championship earlier this year. The team then advanced to the NCAA Tallahassee Regional, where they finished in a tie for seventh place out of 14 competing teams, narrowly missing the chance to advance to the NCAA Championship event.
The recognition of the Aztecs’ academic success reflects the team’s consistent dedication to both excellence in the classroom and performance on the golf course. Recently graduated player Justin Hastings notably ended his collegiate career with two tournament victories and recorded the second-best scoring average in the program’s history at 70.33.
In addition to the team’s academic accolades, individual former Aztec golfers have also made headlines. J.J. Spaun, who played for SDSU from 2009-2012, won the 2025 U.S. Open held from June 12-15 at Oakmont Country Club. Spaun became the fifth player in history to finish the U.S. Open with a birdie-birdie finish in regulation and was the only competitor under par during the final round, finishing at 1-under 279. Spaun had an impressive start to the tournament with a first-round score of 66, placing him in the lead at 4-under.
Additionally, Xander Schauffele, another notable SDSU alumnus, won two major tournaments in the past season, claiming victories at both the PGA Championship and The Open. These successes contribute to a legacy of excellence among San Diego State golfers, with Spaun and Schauffele being part of a select group of former Aztecs who have won three of the last six major championships.
Hastings also made an impact this season as he was the low amateur in two out of three majors he participated in, including both the Masters and the U.S. Open, further showcasing the caliber of talent emerging from the SDSU program.
The Aztecs continue to look forward to their next competitive challenge, embarking on the journey to clinch their fourth straight MW championship, scheduled to take place from April 25-27 at Emerald Valley Golf Club in Creswell, Oregon.
This drive for continued excellence is underscored by the solid performances of current team members including Chanachon Chokprajakchat, Tyler Kowack, Justin Hastings, and Harry Takis. Earlier in the season, SDSU achieved a significant milestone by winning its first Western Intercollegiate championship since 1960, finishing the tournament with a final score of 6-under 1,044. In that event, they were one of only two teams to finish under par, alongside No. 42 Stanford, and four SDSU players achieved individual under-par scores.
The combination of academic honors and competitive achievements underlines the San Diego State men’s golf team’s commitment to excellence, making it a formidable force both on the course and in the classroom.
