San Diego, CA – The San Diego State University (SDSU) swim and dive program achieved a commanding 33-24 victory over the University of San Diego (USD) during their annual season-opening pentathlon meet. This victory adds to SDSU’s impressive record, marking the fourteenth consecutive win against USD in pentathlon competitions since 2011.

SDSU claimed dominance by securing the top 11 finishes in the pentathlon. Freshman Roni Black emerged as the individual champion, completing the pentathlon with a combined time of 4:59.01. Black narrowly outpaced defending champion Reka Nyiradi, who finished with a time of 4:59.50, while sophomore Liv Peebles followed closely behind at 4:59.81. Freshman Sierra Tallman (5:01.35) and sophomore Alli Mann (5:02.60) rounded out the top five finishers, showcasing the talent within the SDSU program.

In addition to their overall success in the pentathlon, Mann had an outstanding performance by winning both the 100 freestyle and the 100 butterfly events. In the 100 freestyle, Mann finished in 50.96 seconds, significantly outpacing Kaydence Bispo, who came in second at 51.60 seconds, and senior Alyssa Schlller, who finished third in 52.06 seconds. Mann’s triumph continued in the 100 butterfly, where she clocked 56.62 seconds, ahead of Nyiradi with 57.27 seconds and Charlotte Sevin at 57.98 seconds.

Senior Moa Bergdahl also shone in the meet, winning the 100 breaststroke in a time of 1:03.53. Bergdahl triumphed over Roni Black (1:04.80) and Branca (1:06.05). In the 100 individual medley, freshman Sierra Tallman secured first place with a time of 59.89, closely outfinishing Peebles, who recorded a time of 59.95.

To enhance the competition, head-to-head scoring was utilized, awarding points to the top three finishers from each team (12-11-10-9-8-7), which contributed to the overall team score. SDSU swimmers also participated in additional unsanctioned races, providing opportunities for individual competition outside of the scored events.

In the 50 freestyle, Mann continued her stellar performance, finishing with a time of 23.88 seconds, followed by Camille Seiley (24.45) and Melanie Quinto (24.82). Similarly, in the 50 butterfly event, Tallman clinched victory at 26.78 seconds, edging past Sevin, who finished in 26.85 seconds. Bergdahl secured a second victory with a time of 29.69 in the 50 breaststroke, while Black and Branca followed with times of 30.63 and 30.81 seconds, respectively.

On the USD side, Reka Nyiradi claimed victory in the 500 freestyle, completing the race in 5:11.05, significantly ahead of Kaydence Bispo, who secured a second-place finish at 5:14.87. Despite the overall loss, USD demonstrated promising performances from their roster of 21 athletes, including freshman Alison Diehl, who finished 12th in her first collegiate meet with a time of 5:12.92. Sydney Wilson and Skylar Bruner also made notable contributions, finishing 17th (5:19.80) and 18th (5:23.15), respectively.

The next meet for the San Diego State swim and dive program will take place at the USD Sports Center Pool on September 26, against USD again. The competition is set to begin at 1 p.m. PT, promising another exciting encounter between these two local rivals.
