Pursuing such an expansive project doesn’t come cheap. Analysts predict that Amazon might invest between $1 billion to $2 billion annually post-launch, adding to an estimated initial setup cost that could reach as high as $17 billion! Ouch! That’s a hefty investment for a competitive edge in the satellite internet arena.

Orbit Game

As the satellites begin their orbit about 280 miles (450 kilometers) above Earth – notably lower than Starlink’s approximately 340 miles (550 kilometers) – they stand to benefit from the speed advantages of low-Earth orbit. In contrast, geosynchronous satellites orbit at an exceedingly high altitude of 22,236 miles (35,786 kilometers), which significantly delays signal transmission.

Bridging the Digital Divide

The ultimate goal of these satellites is clear: serving remote areas that currently lack access to traditional broadband infrastructure. Amazon’s leadership insists that communications have already been established with all launched satellites, with each one operating as expected. What a relief!
