The pedestrian, who remains unidentified, was walking along the right shoulder when a truck and a Honda Civic collided with them. Anaheim – A pedestrian was struck and killed on the southbound 5 Freeway in Anaheim early Thursday morning, May 15, 2025, shortly after 2:30 a.m. The tragedy occurred when the unidentified individual was walking along the right shoulder of the freeway near Katella Avenue. Despite immediate response efforts, the pedestrian was pronounced dead at the scene.

According to reports, the driver of the vehicle involved in the accident remained on the scene after the collision. Initial investigations by California Highway Patrol (CHP) indicate that the pedestrian was hit by both a truck and a Honda Civic.

Following the incident, several lanes of the freeway were closed for investigation. Authorities closed two right lanes, and a SigAlert was issued at 2:18 a.m., leading to the complete shutdown of the southbound 5 Freeway and the Euclid Street on-ramp. A witness indicated that the pedestrian was in the middle lanes of the freeway at the time of the collision.

Traffic conditions were affected significantly in the immediate aftermath, with the far right lane being reopened at approximately 3:11 a.m. However, all lanes did not reopen until around 7 a.m., resulting in backup stretching back to Valley View Avenue.

The Orange County coroner was awaited at the scene to identify the victim, but as of now, the pedestrian’s name, age, and gender remain unavailable. The California Highway Patrol continues to investigate the circumstances surrounding the crash and has urged anyone with information to come forward.

This tragic event highlights the dangers pedestrians face on highways where they may inadvertently find themselves in risky situations. Despite the presence of safety measures and regulations designed to protect individuals traversing these busy roadways, incidents of this nature continue to occur, reminding the public of the critical importance of road safety.

The CHP reported the incident at 2:03 a.m., indicating that swift action was taken to address the situation. However, it is essential for drivers to remain vigilant, especially in areas where pedestrians might be present, to prevent such tragedies from recurring.

As the investigation unfolds, further details regarding the circumstances of the incident and traffic patterns on the 5 Freeway in Anaheim will become clearer. The affected community is left to grapple with the loss, as officials work to ascertain the factors that contributed to this life-ending collision.
