Three burglary suspects lost their lives early Wednesday morning, July 17, 2025, following a police chase that ended in a crash on the northbound side of the 5 Freeway near Brookhurst Street in Anaheim. The crash occurred at approximately 3:25 a.m., resulting in tragic consequences and significant traffic disruptions in the area.
The incident began around 2:50 a.m., when Anaheim police officers responded to a report of suspicious activity involving a stolen vehicle. Upon arriving at the scene near the intersection of Malboro Avenue, Euclid Street, and La Palma Avenue, officers observed the suspects stealing parts from a parked car. As officers attempted to intervene, the suspects fled the scene in a black sedan at high speeds.
During the chase, which lasted a short time, the suspects reportedly discarded several items from their vehicle onto the freeway. The pursuit concluded dramatically when the sedan lost control and overturned off the roadway, landing on its roof on an embankment.
The tragic outcome of the crash included the deaths of the three suspects. In addition, two other passengers in the vehicle were hospitalized, with one reported in stable condition and the other in critical condition. Fortunately, no other vehicles or motorists were involved in the crash, and law enforcement officers were unharmed during the pursuit.
Following the incident, traffic on the northbound lane of the 5 Freeway experienced significant delays, with congestion extending approximately half a mile. Authorities worked diligently to clear the scene, but as of 7 a.m., traffic remained backed up, and drivers were advised to avoid the area. A SigAlert was issued, closing several lanes of the freeway while the California Highway Patrol initiated an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the crash.
Investigators are now focusing on gathering information regarding the suspects’ activities before the chase. Anaheim Police Sergeant Matt Sutter confirmed that the individuals involved were engaged in burglary activities prior to the encounter with law enforcement. While the identities of the deceased suspects and the hospitalized individuals have not been publicly released, the investigation aims to provide clarity on the situation.

They have also noted the possibility of pursuing wrongful death claims related to the circumstances surrounding the crash. As the investigation unfolds, more details are expected to emerge, shedding light on the events that transpired leading up to the fateful pursuit.
