Anaheim, California Protests Against ICE and Trump Administration Policies Continue to Surge

Protests against Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and policies enacted by the Trump administration have attracted significant public attention across Southern California, with gatherings in Anaheim, Los Angeles, and beyond. On Thursday night, approximately 200 demonstrators rallied near Angel Stadium to voice their dissent against ICE activities in Orange County.

During the Anaheim protest, activists waved Mexican flags and took to the streets, dancing and celebrating as cars honked in support. The event was described as festive, with music contributing to an upbeat atmosphere. This gathering was part of a broader wave of protests leading up to a planned “No Kings Day” demonstration on Saturday from 4 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at La Palma Park, which is one of over 1,500 anti-Trump protests across the nation. These demonstrations have been organized in response to a military parade scheduled in Washington D.C. coinciding with President Trump’s birthday and the Army’s 250th anniversary.

Protests also erupted in downtown Los Angeles on Sunday, following nationwide demonstrations denouncing President Trump’s illegal immigration policies. Recent events have seen federal agents conduct immigration raids in the area, including an operation at the Santa Fe Springs Swap Meet that resulted in the detention of several individuals. Masked federal agents were reportedly seen apprehending people in the vicinity.

The Trump administration is aiming to ramp up deportations, targeting a goal of up to 3,000 deportations per day, despite drawing criticism and potential legal challenges related to immigration enforcement tactics. As protests escalate, the Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) reported a total of 561 arrests linked to ongoing protests, with 49 arrests made during demonstrations in downtown L.A. on Thursday night alone. Over $11.4 million has been spent on ICE protest-related activities according to the Los Angeles Controller, Kenneth Mejia.

In response to the unrest, President Trump has deployed 4,000 California National Guard troops and 700 Marines to manage demonstrations while immigration raids continue. However, a federal court hearing to address the control of these troops is scheduled for Tuesday, as Governor Gavin Newsom challenges the federalization of the National Guard based on constitutional concerns.

The protest in Anaheim proved to be relatively peaceful, with police reporting no arrests or use of force. Nonetheless, the late-night curfew in downtown Los Angeles has been extended through the weekend, affecting performances at venues like the Mark Taper Forum.

Significant crowds gathered for the “No Kings” rally in downtown L.A., where approximately 30,000 demonstrators marched through Gloria Molina Grand Park and across various parts of downtown. While most gatherings remained peaceful, there were instances of tension leading to confrontations with police and some arrests, as police issued dispersal orders during the event.

Community support for the protests was evident, with many drivers honking in encouragement as demonstrators took to the streets. The protests were fueled, in part, by a recent ruling from a federal judge against Trump’s deployment of the National Guard, highlighting concerns over constitutional violations. Although the 9th Circuit Court temporarily stayed the ruling, further hearings are scheduled for later this month on June 17.

As these protests develop, public attention continues to focus on immigration policies and local law enforcement, underscoring the ongoing debates around the issues facing communities across the nation.
