The Aztecs and Wildcats face off during an intense softball match.
In a nail-biting contest at SDSU Softball Stadium, the Aztecs faced the No. 12/13 Arizona Wildcats but lost 1-0. The game featured standout pitching from both teams, particularly Cece Cellura. Despite recording only three hits, the Aztecs showed resilience, but a seventh-inning solo home run sealed their fate. They aimed for redemption in a rematch the following Saturday, ultimately securing a 1-0 victory and splitting the series. The Aztecs now prepare to take on San Jose State at home as they look to build on their momentum.
It was another exciting evening at SDSU Softball Stadium in San Diego as the Aztec softball team squared off against the formidable No. 12/13 Arizona Wildcats last night. In a game that had fans on the edge of their seats, the Aztecs fell to the Wildcats with a nail-biting score of 1-0.
What can be better than a great matchup between two talented pitchers? Last night’s game was highlighted by an outstanding performance from SDSU’s own Cece Cellura and Arizona’s Devyn Netz. Both threw fantastic outings, keeping the game scoreless as they battled it out for a full six innings. Cellura started strong, striking out Arizona’s Dakota Kennedy and Kaiah Altmeyer, showing off her skills right from the get-go.
Throughout the game, Cellura seemed unstoppable. After allowing a one-out single in the second inning, she entered a rhythm, retiring 11 consecutive batters until a double in the sixth inning threatened to break her momentum. The Aztecs’ defense, however, was sharp, executing a hit-and-run double play that kept Arizona from capitalizing on that situation.
The game took a heart-stopping turn in the seventh inning. Just when it looked like the Aztecs might pull off a win, Devyn Netz, who had proven herself so far in the game, swung for the fences and hit a solo home run! That *much-needed* run turned into the decisive point that would seal Arizona’s victory.
Even with the tough loss, it’s important to note that Cece Cellura pitched a complete game—her third of the season—all of which have regrettably ended with a score of 1-0. This pitching ace now holds a season record of 12-7, demonstrating her tenacity and skills, even in defeat.
The Aztecs recorded just three hits throughout the match. Angie Yellen grabbed a single in the third inning, and Julie Holcomb found success with an infield single in the fourth. In the sixth inning, Holcomb had another chance to break the tie with an infield single but could not advance past second after a wild pitch.
After this tightly contested matchup, the Aztecs were determined to bounce back. On Saturday, they met Arizona once again. This time, the tides turned favorably for SDSU, as they managed to secure a *well-earned* 1-0 victory, allowing them to split the series. Following that stellar performance, Grace Uribe was rightfully recognized as the Mountain West Pitcher of the Week for her contributions in the Saturday game.
The excitement doesn’t end here! The Aztecs are gearing up to face San Jose State at home, with the series set to kick off this Thursday. As the season continues, fans can look forward to more thrilling moments of Aztec softball action. Will they maintain their winning momentum? We can’t wait to find out! So, mark your calendars and cheer on their journey!
