Alongside this, parking fees will be frozen for a year and discounted bus passes will be available. Some students have expressed concerns about the lack of flexibility with this new rule and question student input in the decision-making process. Long Beach, California – Starting in the Fall 2025 semester, California State University, Long Beach (CSULB) has announced a significant change to its parking permit policy, limiting students to just one vehicle per parking permit. This adjustment is intended to streamline parking operations and reduce confusion around permit sharing, which is not allowed under current policies.

The decision was communicated to students via email by the Parking and Transportation Services department as part of the modifications for the upcoming 2025-26 academic year. Along with the one-vehicle limit, other changes include a one-year freeze on parking fees, the reopening of an overflow parking lot, and the availability of discounted bus passes through the GoBeach app.

Chad Keller, a public relations and communications specialist for the Parking and Transportation department, explained that the new policy aims to eliminate misunderstandings regarding the permissible number of vehicles tied to a single permit. The department has frequently dealt with appeals from students who received citations based on violations of permit sharing rules, prompting the need for clear guidelines.

However, the one-vehicle restriction has drawn criticism from some students. Cristian Martinez, a fourth-year business management major at CSULB, expressed concern that this policy could hinder accessibility for students who may rely on multiple vehicles. The change is perceived by some as limiting support for students who need flexibility in their transportation options.

In the past, the Parking and Transportation Advisory Committee provided a platform for student feedback regarding parking policies. This committee was recently disbanded due to low attendance. Currently, the Alternative Transportation Committee remains active but was not consulted for the latest policy changes. Normally, consultation occurs for substantial updates like fee increases, but less significant adjustments, such as this vehicle limit, might not receive the same level of student input.

Associate Vice President Jeffrey Klaus acknowledged that the new policy does reduce flexibility for students and questioned if their perspectives were adequately considered in the decision-making process. While the changes are described as adjustments to existing policies rather than a complete overhaul, the effective limitation of vehicles per permit marks a shift in approach towards parking management.

Despite the limitations, officials stress that the overarching goal of these amendments is to enhance parking management by implementing technological solutions and soliciting student feedback. They also encourage students to voice concerns about parking issues and policies through Associated Students, Inc. (ASI), ensuring that student opinions can be represented in related campus matters.

Overall, CSULB’s new parking regulations for the Fall 2025 semester reflect an ongoing effort to address the complexities of campus parking while balancing student needs and operational considerations. As the semester approaches, the university stands committed to improving the parking experience for its students as part of its broader mission to provide accessible education. The response from the student community remains to be seen as they adjust to the latest policies.
