News Summary

Danielle Martz has graduated from the MSW program at California State University, Fullerton. She is part of an initiative supporting social work students in California who aim to serve vulnerable communities. The program, backed by CalOptima Health, provides financial aid to students committed to working within Orange County healthcare settings. Martz’s journey reflects her dedication to social work, shaped by personal experiences and a desire to help others. As she embarks on her career, she emphasizes the importance of healing and connection in social work.

San Juan Capistrano – Danielle Martz has successfully graduated from the Master of Social Work (MSW) program at California State University, Fullerton, on May 21, 2025. As a mother of five daughters, Martz is now one of the inaugural graduates of a new stipend initiative designed to support social work students across California, specifically targeting those dedicated to serving vulnerable communities within Orange County healthcare settings.

The innovative program, implemented in 2023 through a partnership between CalOptima Health and selected social work programs, offers $20,000 per year for each student enrolled in a two-year MSW program. To benefit from this financial support, graduates are required to commit to working in an Orange County healthcare environment, catering to CalOptima Health members for a period of two years.

Martz discovered the CalOptima Health Stipend Program during a summer course following her first year in the MSW program. She recognized it as a significant opportunity, aligning with her aspirations to support and uplift those in need through social work. Martz’s journey towards earning her MSW was shaped by her own experiences; she grew up in rural Ohio and relocated to California alone at the age of 20 after her father’s incarceration, an experience that informed her commitment to helping vulnerable populations.

Initially envisioning herself as a stay-at-home mother, Martz felt a strong inclination to pursue a professional career in social work. She realized her natural ability to create safe spaces where individuals felt comfortable sharing their stories, highlighting her potential in the social work field. However, she faced challenges such as impostor syndrome during her first semester in the program, grappling with feelings of inadequacy while comparing herself to her peers.

As she progressed through her studies, Martz found that the mission of social work—serving vulnerable populations—resonated deeply with her personal values and experiences, solidifying her decision to enter the field. With support from CalOptima Health, she is now eager to embark on her career as a social worker, intending to work in a hospital environment where she can assist patients and families during emotionally charged circumstances.

Martz is an advocate for initiatives like the CalOptima Health stipend program, which aims to lower the barriers for graduate education in social work. This program also seeks to address the pressing workforce shortages in Orange County by actively recruiting historically underrepresented groups within the field of social work. With a commitment to healing and connection, Martz understands the importance of her role in the community and the impact she can have on others.

Among 21 students graduating in this first cohort of a five-year program designed to expand the social work workforce for Medi-Cal populations, Martz represents a promising new generation of social workers ready to serve. She emphasizes the need for healing, change, and connection, as societal challenges continue to foster a climate of uncertainty and vulnerability for many individuals.

As Danielle Martz steps into her new role, she embodies the spirit of resilience and dedication that is essential for tackling the complexities of social work. Through her education, personal experiences, and the support of community programs, she aims to make a meaningful difference in the lives of those she will serve.
