News Summary

Unconfirmed reports of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) activity at Disneyland have sparked concerns among the Latino community in Orange County. Despite rumors circulating on social media, Disney and local officials dispute these claims. A recent incident near Pearson Park, where agents pursued a Latino man, heightened perceptions of increased immigration enforcement, leading to widespread anxiety. Politicians are voicing concerns over potential racial profiling and the effect of national policies on local residents, while the Rapid Response Network has reported a surge in immigration enforcement sightings in the area.

Orange County, California – Concerns have arisen in Orange County regarding unconfirmed reports of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) activity at Disneyland. Rumors proliferated via social media and community platforms claiming that ICE agents were on-site interrogating workers and guests. However, both Disney and Anaheim officials have disputed these claims, labeling them as unfounded.

The situation took a different turn the following morning when credible cellphone videos emerged, showing an SUV in pursuit of a man near Pearson Park, approximately two miles from Disneyland. This incident has become a focal point, illustrating the heightened anxiety among the Latino community due to the perception of increased immigration enforcement.

Political representatives, including Representative Lou Correa, have expressed that recent ICE raids, particularly one executed on June 9 in nearby Santa Ana and Fountain Valley, have exacerbated fears surrounding potential immigration enforcement, particularly affecting local residents. This sentiment has been echoed by other local officials who attribute rising tensions to national immigration policies.

The Pearson Park incident, which involved agents in black demanding identification from a young Latino man, has drawn scrutiny. According to accounts, the man was asked to confirm his citizenship status after he proclaimed he was a U.S. citizen. Following this, one individual reportedly fled on foot, prompting the agents to pursue him in their SUV, ultimately apprehending him shortly before Anaheim Councilmember Natalie Rubalcava arrived on the scene.

Rubalcava, who viewed the incident via video after it was reported, has raised concerns regarding the potential for racial profiling in these immigration enforcement operations. Meanwhile, ICE has not publicly responded to inquiries about any activities at Disneyland or the context of the events unfolding at Pearson Park.

The Orange County Rapid Response Network hotline has reported a surge in tips and sightings of immigration enforcement actions following the outcry related to the prior ICE raids. The network employs a verification system to assess reported ICE sightings, utilizing criteria such as “size, action, location, uniform, time and equipment” to substantiate claims. Despite the rampant sharing of social media posts related to ICE at Disneyland, the network confirmed there was no actionable evidence of ICE presence at the resort.

Amid the spread of misinformation, several posts online regarding alleged ICE activity at Disneyland lacked any photographic or video evidence. Consequently, the Rapid Response Network highlighted that these accounts were largely inaccurate. The organization noted that while there have been confirmed minor immigration raids, challenges persist in verifying larger-scale enforcement actions, particularly in well-known public venues.

Recent unrelated immigration raids, such as one at a local car wash, resulted in the custody of seven employees, further raising concerns about immigration enforcement trends in the area. Anaheim spokesperson Mike Lyster addressed the ongoing reports of ICE sightings in the city, confirming an investigation at Disney on a Wednesday where he found no agents present.

Following the incident at Pearson Park, Lyster confirmed the likelihood of a federal immigration enforcement action but stated the specific details remain unclear. Community members and activists continue to monitor and investigate reported ICE activity across Orange County in a bid to provide accurate information to residents. Sandra De Anda, representing the Rapid Response Network, criticized ICE for the dissemination of misinformation, noting a shift in the agents’ operational tactics when compared to previous administrations, which has added to the community’s uncertainty and fear.

As fears about immigration enforcement persist, the community remains vigilant, with local representatives and organizations working to address uncertainty and provide support to affected individuals.
