Fullerton, California – Mike Tansley, a distinguished alumnus of Cal State Fullerton’s (CSUF) Cross Country and Track & Field teams, has made a lasting impact on the university’s athletic legacy. As an accomplished athlete, Tansley earned All-American honors in the Steeplechase in 1994 and became a two-time Big West Men’s Cross Country champion in 1992 and 1993. He also secured the Big West Men’s Steeplechase championship in both 1992 and 1994, establishing himself as a formidable competitor.
Tansley’s athletic journey began during his sophomore year at Dana Hills High School, where he gained attention from CSUF head coach John Elders. Despite receiving offers from numerous prestigious colleges, including USC, Arkansas, and West Point, CSUF was the first to pursue him actively. Initially signed to attend Northern Arizona University, Tansley experienced homesickness just before his arrival and ultimately decided to take a detour. After one year at Long Beach City College and becoming acquainted with the Steeplechase event, he transferred to CSUF.
In his early years at CSUF, Tansley redshirted in 1991 due to a minor injury, allowing him to adapt to the rigorous demands of Division 1 athletics. He first showcased his talent by winning the Big West men’s cross country championship in 1992, posting a personal best time of 25:53:00. Building on this success, he further improved his performance, completing the 8k in just 24:38:00 in 1993 and claiming his second consecutive Big West title.
During his time at CSUF, Tansley also excelled in the Steeplechase, setting a school record with a time of 8:41:27, a record that endures over 30 years later. His notable 1994 performance at the NCAA Championships in Boise, ID, saw him finish 6th in the nation, solidifying his status as an elite athlete. Coach Elders consistently praised Tansley for his determination and competitive spirit.
Tansley’s memories from his time at CSUF extend beyond competition. He recalls attending basketball games, including a thrilling victory against UNLV, which adds to his cherished college experiences. He expresses gratitude for the support from counselors and staff during his academic journey and considers his relationships with Coach Elders and teammate Steve ‘Tiny’ Frisone as lifelong connections.
After completing his collegiate career, Tansley built a fulfilling life and family. He met his wife, Marina, during an acting class at CSUF, and together they have two children: Maya, 21, who is currently enrolled at Cal State Fullerton, and Michael, 18. Tansley has dedicated the past 17 years to serving as an elementary school librarian at Chámmakilawish Pechanga School in Temecula, California. He also shares his passion for running as the assistant cross country and track coach at Great Oak High School in Temecula.
In his coaching role, Tansley finds deep satisfaction in guiding young athletes, believing that mentoring the next generation is the most rewarding aspect of his professional journey. His ongoing connection with Coach Elders also remains significant, reflecting the deep bonds formed during his time at CSUF. He fondly remembers the camaraderie of his Titan teammates, who motivated him to pursue collective success.
Mike Tansley’s impressive achievements and enduring contributions to the athletics community demonstrate the profound legacy he has created at Cal State Fullerton and beyond, inspiring future generations of runners.
