With over 30 years’ experience in higher education and a strong background at UNK, he aims to drive growth and innovation. His appointment comes after a public vetting process, with confidence expressed in his ability to build on the legacy of former chancellor Doug Kristensen.
Kearney, Nebraska — The University of Nebraska Board of Regents has officially appointed Dr. Neal H. Schnoor as the next chancellor of the University of Nebraska at Kearney (UNK). This decision was made during a regularly scheduled meeting held at Varner Hall in Lincoln, with the vote confirming Schnoor as the priority candidate for the position, a title he received in April 2025. His tenure will begin on July 1, 2025.
Dr. Schnoor, a Nebraska native, has a substantial background in higher education and has been a long-time faculty member and administrator at UNK. His recent experience includes serving as president of Northern State University in South Dakota since 2021. During his time there, Schnoor led several pivotal initiatives, focusing on developing strategic plans, driving academic innovation, and securing legislative support for university programs and facilities. The Board of Regents expresses confidence that his leadership will be crucial for UNK’s growth in education and economic development in central Nebraska.
The appointment process included a 30-day public vetting period in which Schnoor interacted with faculty, staff, students, and members of the Kearney community. NU President Dr. Jeffrey P. Gold highlighted Schnoor’s comprehensive understanding of UNK’s mission and his established record in fostering innovation and collaboration as key reasons for his selection. Schnoor has demonstrated a commitment to providing a premier educational experience for students, emphasizing his excitement about the opportunity to serve as chancellor.
With over 30 years of experience in leadership and strategic planning in higher education, Schnoor’s diverse skill set is anticipated to bring fresh energy and momentum to the Kearney campus. He is also a first-generation college graduate, having earned his undergraduate degree from Wayne State College, as well as his master’s and doctorate from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. Schnoor resides in Kearney with his wife, Teresa, a retired elementary school principal, and they have two grown children.
Dr. Schnoor succeeds Doug Kristensen, who retired in May 2024 after an impressive 22-year tenure as chancellor, the longest in UNK’s history. Since Kristensen’s retirement, Dr. Charlie Bicak has been serving as interim chancellor. The Board of Regents and the university community are optimistic about Schnoor’s ability to build on Kristensen’s legacy by establishing collaborative partnerships within the university and the surrounding community.
As the new chancellor, Dr. Schnoor faces the critical task of guiding UNK into its next chapter. With a focus on education and economic growth, he is expected to enhance the university’s role as a vital driver in these areas for central Nebraska. Schnoor’s vision for UNK includes not only sustaining its established values but also pursuing innovative paths to ensure the university meets the evolving needs of its students and community.
In summary, Dr. Neal H. Schnoor’s appointment as chancellor of UNK marks an important transition for the institution. His extensive experience in higher education coupled with his deep-rooted connection to Nebraska positions him as a promising leader committed to excellence and forward-thinking initiatives.
