Redwood City Appoints New Director of Parks, Recreation, and Community Services

Redwood City has appointed Tiarra Warner as the new Director of Parks, Recreation, and Community Services, effective August 11, 2025. The announcement was made by City Manager Melissa Stevenson Diaz, marking a significant leadership change in the department.

Warner brings over 15 years of municipal experience in recreation and community services, having worked in various capacities across multiple California cities. Currently, she serves as the Recreation Manager for the City of Rohnert Park, where she has also held the position of interim Acting Director of Community Services.

Her extensive background includes managing a diverse array of programs, such as youth sports, senior services, large-scale community events, and inclusive recreation initiatives. This depth of experience is expected to benefit Redwood City’s Parks, Recreation, and Community Services Department, which oversees more than 30 parks and open spaces, several community centers, and programs aimed at promoting health, community connection, and lifelong learning.

In her new role, Warner will have key projects to address, including the anticipated opening of a new Senior Center later this year. This project underscores the city’s commitment to investing in services for its aging population and fostering community engagement.

City Manager Diaz praised Warner for her passion for community building and her extensive experience in various city environments. Her understanding of inclusive practices and leadership in community engagement have earned her recognition throughout the state.

Warner holds a Master of Science in Recreation Administration and a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration from California State University, Long Beach. Additionally, she serves as the Chair of the California Park and Recreation Society’s JEDI (Justice, Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion) Counsel, highlighting her commitment to fostering diversity and inclusion within recreational spaces.

Warner’s appointment follows the tenure of Derek Wolfgram, who has served as the interim director since April 2024 after the retirement of Chris Beth, who concluded over 25 years of service with the city. The transition aims to continue the city’s efforts in enhancing its parks and community services while building a more inclusive environment for all residents.

With her significant background in the field and a focus on community needs, Tiarra Warner is positioned to lead Redwood City’s Parks, Recreation, and Community Services into a new era of development and community focus.
