Overview of Orange County highlighting areas at risk of wildfires.
As summer approaches, residents in Orange County are being advised by the California Office of the State Fire Marshal to remain vigilant against wildfires. The recent update to Fire Hazard Severity Zones in March has highlighted increased risks, especially in Southern California. Certain areas, such as Anaheim, have seen significant changes in fire hazard assessments. With tens of thousands of homes built in fire-prone zones, community awareness and preparedness are key as the wildfire season nears.
Orange County – As summer approaches, the California Office of the State Fire Marshal is urging residents to remain cautious regarding wildfires in their communities. In March 2025, CAL FIRE updated its Fire Hazard Severity Zones to address the increased wildfire risks, particularly in Southern California. This intervention is essential as various regions grapple with rising temperatures and altered fire conditions due to climate change.
The updated Fire Hazard Severity Zones categorize wildfire threats into three levels: moderate, high, and very high. Chief Daniel Berlant highlighted that a significant number of residents in Southern California are now within these designated wildfire hazard zones. The revisions to the zoning take into account factors such as local topography, vegetation, and historical fire incidents.
In particular, Orange County has seen substantial changes in its fire hazard assessments, with five new cities—Buena Park, Costa Mesa, Huntington Beach, Laguna Hills, and Placentia—added to the fire hazard severity zones. Most of these new additions possess all three hazard classifications; however, Costa Mesa and Huntington Beach do not have areas categorized as very high risk.
The Orange County Fire Authority (OCFA) plays a critical role in tracking fire history and monitoring high-risk areas throughout the year, enhancing community awareness about potential wildfire threats. In Anaheim, for instance, recent updates have led to an increase of approximately 300 acres in designated fire hazard areas, particularly affecting Anaheim Hills.
It is important to note that these updated fire hazard severity zones are not utilized by insurance companies. However, CAL FIRE affirms that the mapping serves a crucial purpose by ensuring that newly constructed homes adhere to the fire risk level present in their respective locations. Residents have the opportunity to access various resources from Anaheim Fire and Rescue and OCFA for risk assessment and home improvements aimed at mitigating wildfire hazards.
The rapid development across Orange County has significantly heightened the number of homes placed in fire-prone areas, with tens of thousands of properties built in the past three decades. For instance, from 1990 to 2020, Tustin Ranch transformed from having nine homes to over 3,100. Similarly, Irvine’s Orchard Hills area saw an upsurge from no substantial homes to approximately 400, while Crystal Cove in Newport Beach expanded from several dozen homes in 1990 to about 4,500 by 2020. Ladera Ranch also witnessed a dramatic increase, with homes rising from 222 to over 12,000.
100,000 homes in Orange County are expected to be at heightened risk from wildfires over the next 30 years.Recently, fire officials have been active in Orange County, responding to two wildfires that occurred during high-wind warnings, successfully preventing their escalation. The Laguna Beach Fire Department has taken necessary actions to extinguish lingering hot coals and smoldering burn scars located near local trails. Given the current conditions, officials urge the public to refrain from outdoor burning until fire risks diminish and stress the importance of reporting any observed fire activity immediately.
Furthermore, amid the backdrop of recent wildfire incidents in Los Angeles, there is a noticeable uptick in demand within Orange County’s real estate market, as interest grows for both short and long-term leases. The confluence of rising temperatures, changing fire zones, and expanding residential areas makes it imperative for residents to remain vigilant and prepared as wildfire season draws near.
