Maui, Hawaii – Roger Pannier, a distinguished veteran and passionate scuba diver, passed away peacefully on May 17, 2025, at the age of 96. His lifelong enthusiasm for both service and adventure left a lasting impact on family and friends.

Born on August 20, 1928, in Anaheim, California, Roger was the son of Howard and Helen Pannier. Raised among orange groves, he developed a strong work ethic early on, earning $0.50 per hour at the age of 12 by working in his father’s orchards. His formative years were marked by a keen interest in sports, excelling in football, baseball, and basketball while attending Anaheim High School. He was actively involved in his church’s softball team and participated in numerous city leagues.

In 1953, Roger’s academic journey led him to Fullerton Junior College while he worked at Essex Wire Corp. During this time, he diligently saved $4,000, employing various means such as raising chickens, selling eggs, and farming oranges. Encouraged by his father, Roger made a significant investment in a 10-acre orange grove instead of purchasing a new car. Following the land value surge after Disney’s arrival in Anaheim, he leased his grove to a developer in 1963, resulting in profitable returns through the construction of an apartment complex.

Roger also served honorably in both the California National Guard and the U.S. Naval Reserve from 1948 to 1958, fulfilling the role of an aviation ordinance specialist. His military service included time stationed in San Diego, Seattle, and Los Alamitos Naval Air Station.

Family and Personal Life

In 1955, Roger married Barbara Mauerhan, a relationship that blossomed at their family church. Together they raised three children: Steve, Linda, and Karen. The family relocated from Anaheim to Newport Beach in 1976, marking a significant transition in their lives. Roger’s love for adventure ultimately led him to Maui, Hawaii, in 1980, where he made a remarkable discovery of scuba diving.

Roger’s diving adventures flourished, and he earned his captain’s license, partnering with Ed Robinson’s Diving Adventures. In 1998, he married Tala Kakugawa, and together they traveled extensively, seeking out the world’s best dive spots. Roger took great pride in operating his private boat, “Sunkist Scuba,” where he shared his love for diving by teaching his family and friends.

Legacy and Remembrances

Known for his kindness and generosity, Roger was grateful for his upbringing in a loving Christian home alongside his sister, Lorraine. He leaves behind his beloved wife Tala, his children Steve Pannier and Karen Allen (and her husband Glen), as well as four grandchildren and one great-grandchild named Joshua. Roger was preceded in death by his daughter, Linda DePaul.

Roger Pannier’s rich life narrative is a testament to resilience, adventure, and the importance of family. His legacy continues to inspire his loved ones and those who had the privilege of knowing him. Through his service, family devotion, and passion for diving, Roger leaves an indelible mark on the hearts of many.
