Coach Sean Lewis highlights Denegal’s work ethic and collaboration with backup quarterback Bert Emmanuel Jr. as factors in his selection.

San Diego – San Diego State University’s football program has officially named Jayden Denegal as the starting quarterback for their season opener against Stony Brook on August 28 at 7 p.m. PT at Snapdragon Stadium. This decision follows 28 total practices, comprising 15 spring sessions and 13 during fall camp.

Denegal, a junior transfer from the University of Michigan, brings a wealth of experience despite being relatively new to the Aztecs. He served as the backup quarterback at Michigan during their successful national championship run in 2023. Over three seasons with the Wolverines, he participated in seven games, successfully completing 4 of 5 passes for a total of 50 yards and one touchdown. Additionally, he rushed four times for 10 yards.

The upcoming match against Stony Brook marks Denegal’s first career start at the collegiate level. Coach Sean Lewis has acknowledged Denegal’s impressive work ethic and the respect he earned from his teammates, which played a pivotal role in his selection as the starting quarterback. During practice, Denegal showcased his consistency, efficiency, and ability to produce, solidifying his position as the team’s leader on the field.

Before his transfer to San Diego State, Denegal established himself as a top player at Apple Valley High School, where he amassed over 4,600 passing yards and 69 touchdown passes throughout his high school career. In his senior year in 2021, he completed 121 of 145 passes for 1,545 yards and 24 touchdowns while also contributing with 281 rushing yards and eight touchdowns.

Denegal has expressed enthusiasm regarding his new role, indicating that his approach and strong work ethic will not change as he embarks on this exciting endeavor. He also recognized the competitive nature of securing the starting quarterback position, highlighting his positive relationship with backup quarterback Bert Emmanuel Jr., who has also made valuable contributions to the team.

Coach Lewis has emphasized the impressive depth of talent at the quarterback position, expressing appreciation for both Denegal and Emmanuel’s efforts during practice sessions.

The Aztecs will also engage with their fans during the annual Fan Fest, scheduled for August 14 at Snapdragon Stadium. The event will give fans a glimpse of the team ahead of the season opener. Admission to the Fan Fest is free, although attendees are required to claim tickets in advance. The parking lot for the event will open at 5 p.m. PT, with gates opening at 6 p.m. and the kickoff for the scrimmage set for 7:05 p.m. PT.

As the Aztecs prepare for the upcoming season, they aim to bounce back from a disappointing 3-9 finish last year under Coach Lewis. This season is particularly significant as it marks San Diego State’s final year in the Mountain West Conference before transitioning to the Pac-12. The team’s schedule includes home games against notable opponents such as California, Colorado State, Wyoming, Boise State, and San Jose State.
