An empty baseball field symbolizes the transition in the SDSU baseball program after Shaun Cole's departure.
San Diego State University has announced the non-renewal of baseball coach Shaun Cole’s contract following two seasons marked by disappointing performance, including a 38-76 record. The decision reflects the university’s commitment to improving its baseball program and regaining competitiveness. Athletic Director John David Wicker indicated a national search for a new head coach will commence, aiming to revitalize the Aztecs baseball team’s future. Cole’s tenure saw critical issues, especially in pitching, and as the university seeks new leadership, they hope to restore the program’s former glory.
San Diego, CA – San Diego State University (SDSU) officially announced on Thursday that baseball coach Shaun Cole’s contract will not be renewed, concluding his two-year tenure as the head coach of the Aztecs baseball program. This decision follows a challenging period for the team, characterized by poor performance on the field. Athletic Director John David Wicker conveyed that the university would begin a national search to find Cole’s successor.
In his two seasons as head coach, Cole compiled a disappointing 38-76 record, which translates to a .333 winning percentage. His leadership resulted in a 17-37 record in his first season and a marginally improved 20-39 in the subsequent season. The Aztecs experienced two of the three worst records in the history of the program under his direction, raising concerns about the future direction of the team.
In the most recent season, SDSU showed a slight improvement in their conference performance, finishing with a 14-16 record in the Mountain West. The team managed to qualify for the Mountain West Conference tournament but faced elimination after losses to Nevada and San Jose State.
Throughout Cole’s tenure, the Aztecs grappled with notable issues on the mound, culminating in a team earned run average (ERA) of 6.98. Additionally, SDSU led the conference in walks and runs allowed, highlighting critical gaps in pitching effectiveness. Despite these challenges, Cole made efforts to enhance the program’s visibility, such as improving alumni engagement and increasing the team’s presence on social media.
The decision to part ways with Cole underscores SDSU’s desire to regain competitiveness on the baseball field and build upon its history of NCAA regional appearances. Wicker remarked on the necessity for a new perspective in leadership to effectively navigate the future of the program.
As the search for a new head coach begins, several candidates are already being considered to fill the position. Among them is Brock Ungricht, the current head coach at the University of San Diego, who boasts an impressive record of 130-90-1. Another candidate is Rusty Filter, the head coach at Santa Clara, who has strong ties to SDSU. Gary Henderson, the head coach at Utah, is also in the mix, bringing significant experience with a career record of 442–396–2 and familiarity with coaching in the prestigious Southeastern Conference (SEC). Additionally, Rich Hill, the head coach at Hawaii المعروف بنجاحه الملحوظ في التدريب، لديه إمكانية مدهشة.
This announcement marks a pivotal turning point for SDSU baseball, as the program now seeks to elevate its performance and restore pride among its supporters and athletes. With the search for a new head coach underway, the university hopes that new leadership can initiate a turnaround and set a positive trajectory for future seasons.
As part of its ambitious goals, the athletic department is keen to foster a competitive atmosphere, appealing to recruits and fans alike, with an eye toward restoring the program’s former glory. The upcoming months will be crucial as SDSU embarks on a journey to redefine its baseball program and re-establish itself as a force within collegiate athletics.
