The Aztecs celebrate after their impressive win against Arizona Wildcats.
In a thrilling two-game softball series, the San Diego State Aztecs battled the Arizona Wildcats at SDSU Softball Stadium, showcasing resilience after a Friday loss. SDSU rebounded with a commanding 10-2 victory on Saturday, powered by Gabriella Terrones’ grand slam and stellar pitching from Grace Uribe. With this weekend’s triumph, the Aztecs enhance their dreams of a top seed in the upcoming Mountain West Tournament.
This weekend in sunny San Diego, the San Diego State Aztecs softball team faced off against the renowned No. 12/13 Arizona Wildcats in an exciting two-game series at the SDSU Softball Stadium. The matches kicked off with a tense atmosphere on Friday night, where the first game ended in a nail-biting 1-0 loss for the Aztecs. But the team bounced right back the following day, demonstrating their skill and resilience.
As the weekend rolled in, SDSU proudly held a record of 29-15 overall and 13-6 in the Mountain West Conference. Tied for the most conference wins alongside Fresno State, they are determined to catch up to Nevada’s winning percentage to secure a top seed for the upcoming Mountain West Tournament. The Aztecs have faced tough competition in Arizona, with an all-time record of 10-29 against the Wildcats. To add to the intensity, the teams had previously faced each other on March 2 at the Judi Garman Classic, where Arizona claimed the victory with an 11-3 scoreline.
Going into the weekend series, Arizona had won the last seven matchups against SDSU, but the Aztecs were ready to change that narrative. The rainy weather couldn’t dampen their spirits as they showcased some powerful gameplay throughout the weekend. After their recent series win against Boise State, where they displayed impressive home runs from Jazmin Williams and Quinn Waiki, SDSU was riding high on confidence. Williams and Waiki lit up the scoreboard, giving SDSU an 8-0 lead against Boise State, while Waiki slapped another home run to clinch a thrilling 10-8 victory.
On Saturday, the excitement only grew as the Aztecs executed a stunning 10-2 victory over Arizona. A standout moment came from Gabriella Terrones, who delivered a pinch-hit grand slam, energizing the team and fans alike. Joining in on the action, Julie Holcomb, Jazmin Williams, and Jade Ignacio all contributed with crucial RBI singles. Not to be outdone on the mound, Grace Uribe shined brightly, allowing just two runs over six innings, and her stellar performance earned her the title of Mountain West Pitcher of the Week.
Despite the heartbreaking loss on Friday, both Cece Cellura and Uribe held their ground, keeping Arizona off balance. In a dramatic seventh inning, Arizona’s Devyn Netz made her mark by hitting a solo home run, which ended up being the game-winner. But come Saturday, SDSU came back with a vengeance, and in a thrilling display of teamwork, they managed to hold Arizona to just three hits as Uribe and Cellura combined for seven shutout innings.
The weekend series wrapped up a notable chapter in the Aztecs’ journey, but the season is not over yet! Looking ahead, SDSU will conclude their regular season with a three-game home series against San Jose State. Fans can anticipate a fun-filled week with games set for 6 p.m. on Thursday and Friday, concluding with a noon start on Saturday for Senior Day.
With a weekend full of ups and downs, the San Diego State Aztecs have proven they are a force to be reckoned with as they charge forward into the final stretch of the season. So mark your calendars, and don’t miss out on the action!
