News Summary

San Diego State University has appointed Kevin Vance as the new head baseball coach. Vance, a local graduate, aims to revitalize the program and instill a culture of personal growth and team identity. He brings a successful coaching background and emphasizes the importance of player development. This appointment comes after a period of instability in the program, and Vance’s leadership hopes to restore the team’s competitive edge in college baseball.

San Diego – San Diego State University has officially appointed Kevin Vance as the new head baseball coach, a decision announced during a media presentation on Wednesday. This marks Vance’s inaugural head coaching role with the Aztecs, a significant opportunity for the San Diego native who has deep roots in the local baseball community.

Vance, a graduate of Torrey Pines High School, is set to bring a fresh perspective and a holistic coaching approach to the Aztecs. He expressed a vision of not only creating successful athletes but also developing leaders and better individuals, emphasizing that winning games is a byproduct of this overarching goal. The intent behind his appointment is to establish stability in SDSU’s baseball program, which has seen three different coaches in just the past four years.

The change in leadership comes at a time when the SDSU baseball program is looking to revitalize its performance after several challenging seasons. Prior to the recent coaching turnover, the program maintained a history of stability, with only four head coaches over a span of 79 years until 2014. Vance inherits a program that some have referred to as a “sleeping giant,” yet it experienced two of its worst seasons in Division I history recently and has not qualified for the NCAA Regionals since 2018.

Kevin Vance’s background includes a successful collegiate career at the University of Connecticut followed by a five-season run in professional baseball. Transitioning to coaching, he has spent the past nine years developing his skills, including a notable tenure as the pitching coach at the University of Arizona where he garnered respect and recognition. His commitment to player development encompasses both on-field skills and off-field growth, aiming to cultivate a strong team culture that prioritizes personal development alongside athletic achievements.

As Vance takes on this leadership role, he is aware of the challenges ahead, especially with several key players having recently entered the transfer portal. Roster stability is a priority for him, and he plans to focus on retaining current players while actively seeking to enhance the team’s talent through the transfer portal. Vance recognizes the need to build a competitive roster to elevate the program’s standing in college baseball.

In his new role, Vance aims to foster a culture that is concentrated not only on winning championships but also on developing a strong identity for the team. His enthusiasm for the position is underscored by his personal connection to SDSU, having grown up attending games at the renowned Tony Gwynn Stadium, a venue he hopes will one day host NCAA Regionals under his guidance. His approach aligns with the vision of the athletic department, which seeks to restore the program’s historical success and find a path back to excellence.

Athletic Director John David Wicker highlighted Vance’s local ties and coaching experience as assets that make him particularly suited to lead the Aztecs. Vance’s introduction followed a national search for a head coach, which received support from prominent Aztec alumni including Bud Black, Stephen Strasburg, and Tony Gwynn Jr. Their backing showcases the respect and high expectations surrounding Vance’s leadership of the talented but recently struggling program.

With Kevin Vance at the helm, both the university administration and the baseball community at large are hopeful that his vision and experience will create lasting improvements and restore pride in the SDSU baseball program.
