News Summary

San Diego State University is gearing up for its football season with its opener against Stony Brook at Snapdragon Stadium. Aiming to improve from a tough previous season, the Aztecs are focused on building a stronger team under Coach Sean Lewis. The annual Fan Fest scrimmage will take place two weeks prior, providing fans an early look at the new team dynamics and strategies as they transition into the Pac-12 Conference soon.

San Diego – San Diego State University (SDSU) is gearing up for an exciting 2025 football season, set to start on Thursday, August 28, against the Stony Brook University Seawolves at Snapdragon Stadium. The exact start time for the game is currently not available. This matchup will feature Stony Brook traveling from Long Island, NY, to face off against the Aztecs.

This season is crucial for SDSU as the team looks to improve from last year’s disappointing record of 3-9 in the Football Bowl Subdivision. Head Coach Sean Lewis is entering his second year at the helm and is focused on building a more competitive team. Stony Brook, the opposition in the opener, finished strong last season with an impressive 8-4 record and competes at the Division I Football Championship Subdivision level. This places the Aztecs in a challenging position as they prepare to emerge from a difficult stretch.

To kick off the anticipation for the new football season, SDSU will host its annual Fan Fest scrimmage on August 14 at Snapdragon Stadium. The event is free to attend, requiring fans to claim their tickets in advance through a ticket app, with each fan able to take up to four tickets. Additional tickets can be acquired through the Aztec Ticket Office. Parking at the Fan Fest is priced at $10, with the lot opening at 5 p.m. and stadium gates opening at 6 p.m. The scrimmage is scheduled to begin at 7:05 p.m., allowing attendees a first-hand glimpse of the new football team and innovative game-day experiences.

Coach Sean Lewis has expressed enthusiasm for the Fan Fest, underscoring the importance of fostering stronger connections and confidence within his team as they prepare for a season marked by change. Notably, this year will be the last for SDSU in the Mountain West Conference before transitioning to the Pac-12.

SDSU’s football program has maintained a commitment to full scholarships, managing a roster of 85 players alongside 20 walk-ons. As the Aztecs head into the upcoming season, they are looking to overcome a six-game losing streak that began after a 3-3 midseason record last year. Three of the previous season’s losses were particularly narrow, coming by a combined total of just nine points.

Key players are starting to emerge for SDSU, with junior edge player Trey White and senior kicker Gabe Plascencia being honored as Mountain West preseason players of the year. White was recognized as the preseason MW Defensive Player of the Year and has also made the Bronko Nagurski Trophy Watch List. Plascencia, lauded as MW Special Teams Player of the Year, boasts a phenomenal record from the previous year, converting 13 of 14 field goals — the best percentage in the program’s history.

The Aztecs return all 11 starters from their defense and seven out of nine all-conference performers from the previous season, positioning them for potentially stronger performances in 2025. In the preseason polls, SDSU has been projected to finish eighth in the Mountain West with a total of 202 points. The defending champions, Boise State, is positioned first with 464 points and 35 of 39 first-place votes.

As for the schedule, SDSU’s home games this season will include matchups against California, Colorado State, Wyoming, Boise State, and San Jose State. The university is offering attractive ticket options for fans, including mini plans for three-game packages and single-game tickets priced as low as $23. Season tickets start at $200 and come with various benefits, including interest-free payment plans, encouraging fan support as the Aztecs gear up for a transformative season ahead.
