San Diego – The San Diego State men’s soccer team clinched a thrilling 2-1 victory against Utah Tech on Saturday night, continuing their strong performance in the Western Athletic Conference (WAC). The match, which was streamed on WAC International, provided free admission and was held at 7 p.m.

The win improves SDSU’s overall record to 6-7-1 and their conference record to 2-1-1, placing them in a four-way tie for first place in the WAC. Despite being outshot 16-12 overall and experiencing a significant 10-3 disadvantage in the second half, SDSU showcased resilience and skill to secure the late triumph.

The Aztecs took the lead in the 65th minute when Baptiste Boit scored with assistance from a free kick by Lleyton Imparato. However, Utah Tech quickly responded, equalizing in the 72nd minute with a goal from Tanner Dutra, assisted by Mitch Williams. Just as the game seemed bound for a draw, Tristan Viviani netted the game-winning goal for SDSU in the 89th minute, following a long throw-in from Christian Engmann that created the scoring opportunity.

SDSU’s goalkeeper, Eddy Vargas, made four critical saves during the match, contributing significantly to the victory. The recent win follows a 1-1 tie against UNLV, where Terence Okoeguale scored on a penalty kick to maintain the Aztecs’ competitive momentum.

Since joining the WAC as an affiliate member last season, SDSU has performed admirably, with a record of 8-1-2, marking only one loss during the period. This season has seen seven of SDSU’s 13 matches decided by a single goal or end in a tie, demonstrating the team’s ability to engage in closely contested games. In their last ten road matches, the Aztecs have achieved a commendable record of 7-2-1, reinforcing their effectiveness away from home.

SDSU’s success also highlighted their strong record when scoring first, as they are 13-1-2 this season in such scenarios. When leading at halftime, their statistical advantage continues with a record of 14-2-4. The team’s historical performance at home since 2021 stands at 26-16-6, showcasing a solid home-field advantage. Prior to the season, SDSU was selected as the favorite to finish first in the WAC by the preseason coaches’ poll.

Among the notable achievements, Cianole Nguepissi earned the title of Preseason Defender of the Year and is one of three Aztecs selected for the preseason All-WAC Team, a conference high. In the previous season, SDSU enjoyed a stellar outing, winning the WAC regular season championship without a loss in conference play (7-0-1).

This season, the Aztecs have showcased their depth, with 21 different players starting at least one match. Looking ahead, SDSU will prepare for their next challenge against San Jose State, scheduled for Thursday at 4:30 p.m.
