The Aztecs celebrate their thrilling 1-0 victory over Arizona.
In a tightly contested match, the San Diego State Aztecs softball team secured a thrilling 1-0 victory over the No. 12 ranked Arizona Wildcats. Behind outstanding pitching from Grace Uribe and Cece Cellura, the Aztecs managed to secure this win after a previous loss to the same opponent. Key contributions came from Mia Rodriguez, who scored the only run, and Julie Holcomb, who hit two crucial singles. This win marks a significant milestone as it’s the highest-ranked victory for SDSU since 2024 and the first shutout against a ranked team in over two years.
In a thrilling showdown in sunny San Diego, the Aztec softball team pulled out all the stops to clinch a hard-fought 1-0 victory against the highly-ranked Arizona Wildcats on Saturday. This win was particularly sweet after they faced a tough loss to the same team by the same score just a day earlier.
The spotlight of the match shone brightly on Grace Uribe, who took charge on the mound with finesse and skill. Partnered with fellow pitcher Cece Cellura, the duo combined to pitch a remarkable seven shutout innings, allowing only three hits throughout the game. Uribe’s early-game dominance saw her retire an incredible 18 of 20 batters faced, including a string of nine consecutive outs that had fans on the edge of their seats.
The winning moment for the Aztecs came during the fifth inning when Mia Rodriguez crossed home plate thanks to an unfortunate error from the Wildcats. This single run, as small as it may seem, was enough to secure a significant victory for SDSU, pushing their season record to 30 wins and 16 losses. On the other side of the diamond, the defeat set Arizona back at 40-10, a tough pill to swallow for the talented Wildcats.
Adding to the excitement of the game, Julie Holcomb played a crucial role, hitting two singles and contributing to the only run scored. Her performance and Uribe’s stellar pitching highlighted the teamwork and determination that the Aztecs displayed throughout the match.
Reflecting on the series, it’s worth noting that the first game ended with a similar nail-biter, where Arizona claimed victory with a solo home run from Devyn Netz in the seventh inning. Both games had teams stranded at one run with five hits, emphasizing the tightly competitive nature of the matchup. For each game, the losing teams recorded just three hits without getting on the scoreboard.
This victory against a ranked opponent marks an important milestone for the Aztecs. It is the highest-ranked win for SDSU since they bested No. 12 Arizona back on February 22, 2024. Furthermore, it’s their first shutout against a ranked team since they defeated No. 5/6 Washington on February 26, 2021, making this result even more special for the program and its fans.
As the Aztecs wrap up their regular season, they’re gearing up for an exciting three-game home series against San Jose State next weekend. The games are set for Thursday and Friday at 6 p.m. and Saturday at noon for a special Senior Day celebration. Fans can enjoy all the action live on the Mountain West Network.
In light of her outstanding performance against Arizona, Uribe has been named Mountain West Pitcher of the Week, an honor that not only reflects her exceptional skills but also her critical contribution to the team’s recent success.
As the Aztecs look forward to their upcoming matches, fans are eagerly anticipating what more this talented team will achieve. With determination and teamwork shining through, the future looks bright for San Diego State softball!
