The SDSU Softball team showcasing their skills during a recent tournament game.
The San Diego State (SDSU) softball team suffered a 3-0 defeat to Fresno State in their first game of the Mountain West Tournament, marking their first loss in the event since 2006. Despite a strong performance from their pitchers, the Aztecs struggled to capitalize on scoring opportunities, leaving ten runners on base. With an overall season record of 33-17, the Aztecs still have a chance to advance as they prepare to face Boise State next. This loss highlights their recent challenges against unranked opponents.
The San Diego State (SDSU) softball team fell to Fresno State in their opening game of the Mountain West Tournament, losing 3-0 on Thursday. This marks the Aztecs’ first loss in the Mountain West Tournament since the 2006 Championship game against Utah, ending a significant run of success in the event.
Entering the tournament as the two-time defending champions, SDSU had built up an impressive undefeated record of 6-0 since the tournament’s return in 2023. Following the defeat to Fresno State, San Diego State’s overall season record now stands at 33 wins and 17 losses.
In the match, Grace Uribe took the mound for SDSU, giving up one earned run on six hits over 3.2 innings. Cece Cellura, recognized as a four-time Mountain West Pitcher of the Week, then pitched the remainder of the game, allowing only one hit and striking out two Fresno batters.
Despite the performance from both pitchers, San Diego State’s ability to convert on scoring opportunities proved to be a significant issue, as they left ten runners on base throughout the game. Fresno State managed to produce runs thanks to strategic plays; the Bulldogs scored their first run when Natalie Elias hit a single and then advanced home on a sacrifice fly.
Fresno State extended its lead in the fourth inning, capitalizing on errors and a well-timed fly ball that allowed additional runs to score. SDSU desperately tried to rally multiple times, but they were ultimately shut out, marking their first shutout to a Mountain West opponent since March 17, 2024. This loss also highlights their struggles against unranked opponents, as it is only their second defeat at home this season, with both losses coming at the hands of Fresno State.
The Mountain West Tournament was not held from 2007 to 2022, making this year’s return particularly notable for teams in the conference. San Diego State’s historical performance in the tournament has been strong; their record now stands at 21 wins and 12 losses, giving them the best winning percentage at 0.636 in Mountain West Tournament history.
The Aztecs are not out of contention yet, as they prepare to face Boise State at 3 p.m. on Friday. A victory in this game would not only allow them to advance but also set the stage for a potential rematch against either Nevada or Fresno State later in the day. SDSU is aiming to achieve their third consecutive Mountain West title, which would further solidify their status in the conference.
As the tournament progresses, the San Diego State softball team will be looking for opportunities to rebound from this setback and continue their pursuit of championship glory.
