A softball field filled with hope and ambition, symbolizing the journey of young athletes like Shannon Bustillos.
Shannon Bustillos, a notable Anaheim native, transitioned from a standout softball career to a successful professional life. With roots in sports and a commitment to education, she secured an athletic scholarship to the University of Maryland, where she broke multiple records. After playing overseas and furthering her education in law and business, Shannon is now a Contracts Manager and actively seeks to support future student-athletes with a scholarship fund.
In the sun-soaked city of Anaheim, California, dreams often take flight, and for Shannon Bustillos, her journey began on the baseball field. Growing up in a hardworking family, with a mother who dedicated over twenty years to customer service and a father in construction, Shannon strove not just to play sports but to elevate her future through education. With a focus on earning a college degree, she set her sights on securing an athletic scholarship to turn her dreams into reality.
Initially, Shannon was drawn to the world of baseball, playing alongside her older brother, Ryan. Inspired by his love for the game, she joined in the fun. As time went on and her skills developed, at around the age of ten, spectators and her parents encouraged her to transition to softball. While some thought she should pitch, Shannon had her heart set on being a catcher, a decision that would soon lead her to great adventures.
With unwavering determination, Shannon joined competitive travel ball teams, showcasing her talent and deep passion for the game. At the tender age of 14, she found herself a proud member of the renowned Orange County Batbusters, one of the top teams in the region. In Southern California, where softball thrives, Shannon’s aspirations soared as she honed her skills while traveling with her team, all while keeping places like Canyon High School on her radar.
At Canyon High, Shannon’s journey reached new heights as she played varsity softball all four years, quickly becoming a star athlete. Renowned for her talent and dedication, she earned the MVP award and was inducted into the school’s Athletics Hall of Fame in 2010. Her senior year saw her team battling fiercely in the CIF championship, an experience filled with excitement and heartache after a nail-biting loss due to a walk-off grand slam.
Shannon’s high school experience left a profound impact on her, and when it came time to pursue higher education, she had a special connection through Canyon’s varsity softball head coach, Dan Hay, who introduced her to Laura Watten, head coach at the University of Maryland. After feeling the magnetism of the Maryland campus during an unofficial visit, Shannon made the decision to commit, especially after an exhilarating upset against the Clemson Tigers on October 3, 2009.
Sporting the Terps colors from 2012 to 2015, Shannon carved her name into the record books. She became the all-time leader in career RBIs and doubles, and her record of 30 home runs landed her among Maryland’s best. Not only did she shine on the field, but Shannon also earned accolades like All-Big Ten Second Team honors and Academic recognition throughout her college years. Her time at Maryland was transformative, filled with lifelong friendships and cherished experiences, sparked by the scholarship that changed everything.
After securing her degree, Shannon continued her love for softball overseas, playing for a team in Mannheim, Germany. While coaching the Mannheim Tornados, she also explored Europe, soaking in the beauty of countries like Spain, Greece, and Ireland. Upon returning home, she pursued further education at Western State College of Law, earning her J.D., and has now turned her focus toward a promising career as a Contracts Manager at Bespoke Partners.
Shannon still nurtures ambitions that reach beyond her current role. She is pursuing an MBA at Boston University with a vision of achieving a C-level position in her career. Living happily in Southern California with her husband, Alex, and their dog Harvey, she enjoys traveling and embracing new experiences.
Reflecting on her own life-changing scholarship, Shannon has plans to establish a scholarship fund to help future student-athletes achieve their dreams. With a heart full of gratitude and a desire to foster others’ successes, Shannon Bustillos shows that with persistence and passion, the sky’s the limit!
